LCD panels are definitely getting
less expensive, but they are still a little rich for my blood-especially
when you get up to the 21-inch screens. But they are getting cheaper and
ViewSonic is entering the pricing competition with its new VE170m 17-inch
LCD monitor. The VE170m features a two-inch profile along with wide viewing
angles, and has built-in speakers, a contrast ratio of 300:1, and a 1280
x 1024 resolution at a price point of $899. The screen is TCO 99 and Energy
2000 certified, and ViewSonic says it uses half the energy and takes up
half the desk space of a CRT display with the same screen size. The VE170m
will be available in mid-August through authorized ViewSonic resellers,
distributors and mail order catalogs. Backed by a three-year warranty on
parts, labor and back light, the monitor also includes one year of ViewSonic's
Express Exchange Service, guaranteeing a replacement monitor within 48-hours.
BTW, has anyone ever heard of a monitor manufacturer actually replacing
a back light?
