Pentium 4 'a bad chip' - AMD

But price war continues
A VP AT ADVANCED MICRO DEVICES
in an interview with thestreet.com has dilated on the battles it
is having with chip giant Chipzalla and described the Pentium 4 as a 'bad
chip'.
Benjamin Anixter, VP of external
affairs with AMD said that his firm isn't in a price war with Intel. The
Pentium 4, he claimed, was undesirable and had to be priced low enough to
reach the current price/performance points.
He said that Intel's margins
were being hit because the Pentium 4 was much bigger than the Pentium III,
which Intel is replacing.
While some people (that's us,
AMD), call it a price war, said Anixter, he claimed that Intel was attempting
to force what he called an "inferior product" on the marketplace.
Clock speed should not be the
measure of how powerful a processor is, said Anixter, with a 1.3GHz Athlon
outperforming an Intel 1.7GHz processor. He said that AMD could only supply
25 per cent of the market, but Intel would only get 75 per cent of the remaining
business if the price was right.
Anixter said that the semi industry
is in its 'worst ever' downturn and forecast that things weren't going to
improve quickly.
